| A gourmet evening not to be missed | |
The big culinary news in the Andratx area this month is: The Night of the Stars in Limón y Chelo. Our restaurant has been closed since the New Year and will open at the end of January for a very special event - the return of Christophe Dufau, French chef extraordinaire, who will present a gourmet night in our restaurant on Saturday, 28th January
Those who were lucky enough to get a table last September when Christophe first came to cook for us, know that a feast is in store. This very creative and well known cook from the south of France, holder of a Michelin star for his restaurant "Les Bacchanales" in Vence, near the French Riviera, enjoyed his stay with us last year very much and is back to explore more of the island and present his culinary finds to our guests. Since this time the event will be held inside the house ----- with a roaring fire ----- places are limited and we advise you to book early.
Christophe Dufau is known for his focus on local products, his interest in "wild" edibles, and his beautiful presentations - but most of all, for his insistence that each dish be absolutely delicious. Last time he served us exquisite wild fennel in tempura, collected from the rocks of San Telmo, among other delicacies. This time he proposes nettles, Majorcan fish, lamb, and wild mushrooms, and will be using Sa Taronja's bio-oranges in the dessert. The six course menu, presented here in skeleton form, will be expanded by what he finds on the island and in the local markets. Once again, this is a fundraising effort, Christophe is donating his talent to Sa Taronja, and we hope that many of you will come to celebrate the culinary arts and support the cultural centre.
The dinner will begin with his trademark opener, black-olive grissini and startlingly green parsley pesto - with a cocktail on the house.
It will be followed by an old provincial French favourite, "soupe de pain brûlé" with artichokes
The second spectacular starter is a snail-and-nettle "Barbajuan", a type of large, fried ravioli originating from Monaco.
The fish course (fresh off the boats in the Port of Andratx), will be served with grapefruit and saffron
The meat course will be Majorcan lamb, cooked in two ways: slow and long in a wood-fired oven for the legs and shoulder, or roasted for fillet and rack; a piece of each, served with sweet potatoes and jamaica pepper.
This will be followed by a cheese plate, with a local cheese smoked or cooked by Christophe.
... and finally a spectacular dessert, Turrón crumble with orange and chocolate, with a glass of dessert wine.
The meal will be accompanied by a short-list of the best Majorcan wines, available by the bottle or the glass, with recommendations for each course.
The cost will be 70€ (60€ for members). This includes everything except your choice of wine, and coffee.
As a suitable accompaniment to the Night of the Stars, we offer budding astronomers a chance to look at the heavens from our telescope on the upper terrace. On the 28th the moon - a thin sliver, in its first quarter - will be between Jupiter and Venus, two planets that play prominant roles in the night sky, and which have been moving closer and closer together over the last weeks. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, and Venus is the brightest. We are sure that this unusual conjunction means that 2012 will be a stupendous year for Sa Taronja - big, bright and beautiful. And what better way to begin it?
A special feature of the September event, also to be repeated on Jan 28th, was an exhibition of the work of jeweller Esty Grossman, whose designs are inspired by the flora and fauna of the seabed. At the gourmet evening on January 28th there will again be an opportunity to see, try on and buy the designs of Esty, and sample some superb new recipes by this wonderful chef.

A survey of some of the best wines of Mallorca
This week, as part of our series of wine tastings focused on Mallorca's wineries, we propose something a little different, based on the success of a similar evening last November.
We will be tasting some of the latest and best vintages of the island (not necessarily the most expensive), up to twelve different wines, focusing on summer white wines but with some delicious reds and rosés too. It's a wonderful chance to compare and analyse, to make notes and new discoveries. We will be serving very small quantities of each so you don't all go home drunk! - with canapés by our chef Mariano Torres. This will be followed by a meal of three courses, each paired with an appropiate wine.

Gastronomic pictorial exhibition "The Colour of Jazz" Pepe Pintos has done as a tribute to the sixth edition of the Jazz Festival presented to the media yesterday 7/9/09 at 12.00 in the restaurant Pepe Pintos cooks.
During the presentation, which has come from the head of Tourism Ajuntament de Palma, Joana Maria Borras, representing the festival's international jazz festival, "Eliane" a Brazilian artist based in New York inspired the pattern, Eliane Elias, along with a cover of palm and flower petals that has been presented in synergy with the music box and the artist.

The restaurant Sta. Eulália, winner of the "Tapalma d'Or 2007" from the previous fair, 2007, organized by the Association of Corporate Restoration of Mallorca CAEB be present in the national contest, and compete in the Paseo de Recoletos Valladolid in three sessions, during from 20 to Oct. 22.
At the press conference will be submitted on behalf of the lid and composition, created by chef and restaurateur Inmanol Barragan Maria Jesus Alonso, then you can taste the fold between the media present.
The Fourth National City Spikes and Tapas Valladolid makes Valladolid in the capital of universal cap and skewer. In this fourth edition, the chef Paco Roncero, the restaurant La Terraza del Casino, will be the president of the jury. The choice of Roncero not made this lightly, because this disciple of chef Ferran Adrià, is a fervent advocate of the miniature kitchen, among other author, the book "Tapas of the Twenty-first Century" and "Sandwiches and salads."
The Town Hall of Valladolid, a faithful supporter of this contest will reward the winner skewer with 6,000 euros, 3,000 second and third with 1,500 euros. | |

This year sees the 4th edition of TaPalma (organised by Associació Empresarial de Restauració de Mallorca) and Mallorca Restaurants 121 is proud to be a collaborator in this exciting event.

The town of Sóller celebrates its most popular festival, Fires i Festes de Maig, in
May. Throughout this celebration the role of brave women (valentes dones) is remembered.
According to legend, on May 11th in 1561, pirates arrived at the coast
and entered the house of sisters Catalina and Francisca Casesnoves. These brave
women managed to kill the intruders with a metal bar used to block the door,
thereby saving the town of Sóller! The festival is celebrated from April 30th to May

Tomeu Caldentey launches a new project - Taronja Negre, a different restaurant from his Michelin starred Es Molí den Bou, but located in the same building. Here, the objective is to offer a simpler and more informal dining experience from the main restaurant.
At Taronja Negre there is a Menu of the Day at lunchtime from Wednesday to Friday (20 € plus IVA - 3 courses with two glasses of wine and water) and at night and week-ends a Tasting Menu (€35 plus IVA - includes a starter, fish dish, meat dish, dessert and glass of white and red wine as well as water). | |

Since we received your 121 guide we have 'discovered' parts of Mallorca we have not visited together with the lovely photos and descriptions of the local restaurants. It is like a travelogue and more spectacular on the website. The book is a real treat and it is very useful to learn when restaurants will be open.
We hope to be able to come back and see more of the island and its treasures. I can look in the book and have fond memories of the view from the terrace of a restaurant in Deia.

| 6 Dec 2006 - Turrón Cooking Class in Mallorca | |
The Christmas Season is now upon us: the lights are on in the streets and the shops are stocked with delicious traditional Spanish sweets, like Turrón, Polvorones and Mantecados. An apt time then, to experience a Cooking Class on how to make Turrón! Mallorca Restaurants 121 had the chance to see (and taste!) the creations of pastry chef Jaume Fabrego and chef de cuisine Jordi Calvache: two top-class chefs at the five star Castillo Hotel Son Vida in Mallorca.
It is said that the Moors invented turrón over 500 year ago in Jijona, a small town about 30 miles north of Alicante. Almonds are the main ingredient used in turrón (the marzipan is created with almond flour and sugar). Nowadays there are so many different flavours of turrón, it is hard to keep up with new varieties which include yema or egg yolk, glazed fruits, praline, chocolate and even kiwi!

Ca'n Calent is a modern, family-run restaurant in Campos. Miquel Vicens offers a creative seasonal cuisine which respects the earth's cycles. Because of this, items on the menu change frequently.

| Star Treatment at Ca'n Costa Alcudia | |
I contacted you some time ago about a good restaurant in Alcudia for a large family birthday celebration. You recommended with a couple of others and the Ca'n Costa in Alcudia old town. We previsited the restaurant to speak to them and they could not have done more to help us. They laid us a large table in the garden restaurant area , allowed and assisted us to decorate with balloons and birthday banners on the afternoon of our visit (tue 3 oct) and also supplied us with candles a large birthday cake for the 2 ladies 60th birthday. The meals sevice and manner of everybody in the Ca'n was absolutey excellent. We had the most wonderfull evening not rushed at all in fact we were there for 3 half hours at least. In our party was 16 adults 1 child of 9 and 2 babies (who at 20 months did not really have anthing), we had 3 courses of the most delicious food 24 beers 8 bottles of wine and the cake for a bill of 492 euros, which at 61.5 euros per couple was an absolutle bargin. Oh yes and they gave us 3 bottels of champagne on the house to toast the 2 ladies.

| A FUN Time! Calçotades from Cataluña | |
| From late winter to early spring, the Catalans indulge in a fun (and sometimes messy) version of the BBQ called Calçotades. Calçots (pronounced calsots) are a type of spring onion that ripens at this time of year. Sweet, fleshy shoots are buried with earth as they grow to keep them pale and delicately flavoured. After grilling for a few minutes, you pull the burnt exterior off, dip in Romanesque sauce and eat. When calçots are harvested, huge 'Calçotades' (onion feasts) take place throughout Catalonia. The fun of eating the barbequed onions standing up (with a large bib on, of course) is followed by a sit down meal of grilled meats, washed down with red wine and then dessert. | |

I finally had the opportunity to accept the offer that was made by you and Georgio for the dinner for two at Benadettos. We were received by Michael and Georgio on arrival with a welcome glass of champagne. Michael took care of us personally and supervised our dinner with his selections. The starter was a warm potato soup followed by a Lasagna of quail meat as an aperitivo. The main course was a sumptuous entrecot smothered with onions, mushrooms and cheese. Dessert was a selection of creams and fruits and the whole meal was accompanied by an excellent Four Roses rose wine from Italy.

We will be opening Limón y Chelo for one night in February, on Friday 26th. Guest Chef Mauro Molinaro plans a delicious Italian menu - reservations absolutely necessary. Please note that vegetarians/vegans/gluten-intolerant diners, etc, can be catered for if we know 24 hours in advance! Doors open at 19.30. The menu will include a glass of wine, a 20% discount for members or for parties of 10 or more.

The Jazz Voyeur Festival brings to Mallorca The Georgia Mass Gospel Choir" to put its final seal on his international music festival. The famous American group has chosen to begin its tour Mallorca Spain. The concert, to be held on Wednesday 9 December at 20.30 in Palma's Auditorium, will show the personal side of this choir that accompanied Whitney Houston in "The preacher's wife 'and appeared in the opening and closing Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
